Scalability via Federated Management
Many virtualization managers quickly encounter scalability thresholds. This may not be a problem if the objective is to manage a couple hundred virtual machines. Where thousands or tens of thousands of virtual machines must be managed, however, coordination across multiple management domains can be a daunting task. For example, we have a customer using over 30 VMware VirtualCenter instances to manage roughly 4,000 virtual machines, with the expectation of adding to this infrastructure on an ongoing basis. A single VRM server has been tested and shown to support tens of thousands of virtual machines from a single instance.
DynamicOps Virtual Resource Manager provides a common management interface across many virtualization manager instances. Unlike other products which require you to know which virtualization manager instance to use to manage a specific virtual machine or physical server, VRM abstracts that level of detail, greatly simplifying the management of larger deployments. VRM’s federated approach to management leverages the base capabilities of the individual virtualization managers while consolidating and aggregating management across not only multiple virtualization managers instances but multiple vendors as well.
